  • A good short summary to the main tactics of Advance and Secure is in Coolbox's guide originally written for Joint Operations:

The Art of Advance and Secure

How to read the HUD

  • Base Capture Display - Shows your progress capturing or defending a base. It only appears if you are inside the zone boundary, and is coloured according to who currently owns the base. The multiplier on the end shows the difference between the number of friendlies and enemies, and thus whether you are capturing or losing the base. The more you outnumber the enemy, the faster you capture the base.
  • Info display and hints - Shows useful information about what is going on in the game, and hints on how to play.
  • Base to defend - Shows the name of the base you have to defend, its capture level (full bar is totally under the control of your team), distance to the base, and numbers of friendlies and enemies in that zone.
  • Base to attack - Shows the name of the base you must attack, its capture level (full bar means it is totally under the control of the enemy), distance, and numbers.
  • Player tag - Hangs (roughly) near a friendly soldier. Helps you identify your teammates, even when they are behind walls or buildings. You only see the tags of players less than 1km away from you.
  • Compass - Helps you orient yourself and report the direction of any enemy you spot accurately
  • Zone boundary - The edge of the zone you must capture or defend. Be warned, as soon as you cross into its radius your number will be counted on the base occupance displays in the top right, so the enemy will know you are there (somewhere!).
  • Player minimap arrows. Shows graphically where your teammates are in relation to you on the minimap, and which way they are facing. Use CTRL+Z and CTRL+X to zoom the minimap in and out. Tap each quite a few times to do a bit zoom.

On the bottom left you will also see:

  • Your name and health
  • Your player class type (or "Custom" if you have made your own)
  • The number of human players in the server (AI dont count)
  • The time remaining for this game

AAS for Beginners

The basic idea with Advance and Secure is to choose to either attack the enemy's zone, and make your way towards it, or to stay put defend your own. If you are attacking it is really important to team up with others, because you have to outnumber the enemy in order to capture it.

Winning Advance and secure is all about "the numbers". Its about keeping an eye on where your people are, and making sure that they are in the right place at the right time. Killing people, no matter how good you are at it, doesn't help you win at all, unless you can manoeuvre enough people into the "zone" in order to stop the enemy spawning, and then eventually to capture it. When you set out as a beginner, pick someone who is heading for the enemy zone, and follow them in. Until you outnumber the enemy in the zone, you won't start to capture it. If there is sufficient cover you can try and sneak in and hide undetected. Good players are always keeping their eyes on the zone counters in the top right to choose the right moment to enter the enemy zone. If there are three of you, and three enemies in the zone, then if you enter it won't do anything to stop the enemy spawning, so it might be better to hide on the edge, wait until the numbers dip low, and then burst in at exactly the right moment.

Hints

Here is a list of all the hints you might see during gameplay:

  • Use the armoury near the flag to select a quick player class.
  • When you respawn you join a queue; if the queue is too long, spawn further back.
  • You receive the weapon loadout of your last quick player class when you respawn.
  • Outnumber the enemy in their zone in order to capture the flag.
  • Once an enemy base is de-camped, get within 10m of the flag to capture it.
  • You can find more vehicles and armour at X-Ray, but you have further to drive.
  • Use the distance meters in the top right to see how close you are to a base.
  • Keep an eye on the numbers within your home base, to spot when it is attacked.
  • Revive friendly soldiers using the 'Revive' option from the action menu.
  • Anyone can drag an unconscious soldier out of the line of fire with the 'Drag' action.
  • Try a synchronised attack on the enemy base to gain the element of suprise.
  • Keep together with your team-mates to survive and revive each other.",
  • The medic carries extra smoke grenades to create cover when reviving a fallen soldier.
  • If you can't fight your way in through a bottleneck, a well-placed satchel can make a new entrance!
  • To zoom the minimap in and out, use CTRL+Z and CTRL+X.
  • Keep an eye on the minimap to see where your teammates are.
  • If you are getting sniped at the spawn, pop smoke to put off the snipers, or bring up a BMP.
  • Don't always attack the next base in a straight line, try flanking either side.
  • Never run with scissors.
  • It's never too late to learn the piano.
  • Much thanks and respect to Norrin for his excellent revive scripts.
  • Much thanks and respect to Kegetys for his excellent spectator scripts.
  • You earn 10 bonus points for being the one to capture an objective.
  • You earn 1 bonus point for every 30 seconds in the attacking zone.
  • You earn 1 bonus point for every 60 seconds in the defending zone.
  • You earn a bonus point every time you revive a friendly player.
  • The white counters near the zone displays show the number of AI troops spawned.
  • You can choose when starting a map whether to have AI reinforcements or not.
  • To make a special loadout, select your kit at the armoury, then select: Save Custom Loadout.
  • If you don't like the standard player classes, create your own custom class at the armoury.
  • If you get repeatedly killed at a spawn point, try spawning further back.
  • You need only capture and defend bases shown on the top right display.
  • Use the Mark Teammate option from the armoury to toggle special colouration of your team leader.
  • The player name tags only line up when in first person perspective, and not zoomed in. Fix coming soon hopefully!
  • Enemy AI defending a zone will spawn a new soldier every few seconds, until you get the base capture below 50%
  • When fighting AI soldiers, they don't count towards the zone presence meters in the top right.
  • The best way to seize an objective defended by AI troops is to sneak in and hide.
